A road trip to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has just managed to rise anew after a succession of civil wars, terrorism and the very recent tsunami. Since 2011, the number of tourist visiting the country has nearly doubled, and if it has managed so far to preserve its cities and destinations from the issues of mass tourism, I strongly advise you to get there before it gets crowded.

At 3 hours and a half from Changi, for less than 500 S$ the flight, Sri Lanka is one of the place to consider for a long Week End

Let me just give you 3 tips that I think might guide you in your planning:

Do Not plan ahead!

It almost seemed impossible to me, but believe me, no need to worry about planning everything. There always will be a Guest House available (except for major celebration, of course), at every range of price. Traveling distance might appear short on a map, but takes time to actually be crossed: never hesitate to change your initial plan to take a rest and enjoy the city you first considered just passing by. And in such a rich country, you will never guess in what paradise you may find, so do not take the risk to regret leaving a place because of a booking!

Take the train, as much as possible.

3rd class the charm: you will meet strangers and avoid tourist. My guess is, you will be as happy as I was discovering how much welcoming and sharing are Sri Lankan. Sit on the edge of the wagon like you never would have dare, or even be allowed in your country, and truly enjoy the landscape between Colombo, Kandy, Hatton and Ella. Then, do not forget to eat every specialty wandering sellers will propose you at every stop, and do not refuse there spice, even on fruits!

Climb the Adam’s Peak

Adam's Peak, Sri Lanka's Holy Mountain - Tourism on the Edge

Your first reflex might be to avoid such a stairway ( four thousand steps), but this is one of the best way to share your travel experience with others visitors, and Sri Lankan as well. You will surpass yourself and bring back from your trip what worlds cannot buy.
