So what is there to see if, like I did, you happen to have 3 days to spend in Singapore?
Touristic guide on that matters are very detailed regarding the point of interests of the city, so let me just highlight two places that one might miss.

First, unfortunately not enough known by travelers, you have to get invited on the Helipad. On the top of the Swiss Hotel, once you’ve signed onto its website, you will have the opportunity to spend the night drinking and dancing in front of one of the most impressive view of Singapore.
If you happen to spend the last Thursday of the month in Singapore, be sure to book the night.

Then, often avoided by tourists, the National Museum of Singapore. Even if you only have three days, I must strongly recommend that you take the detour.
Visiting a place is nice, discovering its habitants is better, understanding its history is something else, far above what you will earn swimming at Sentosa’s island. Singapore is a rich and therefore difficult country to understand for a westerner like I am, and if you would like to figure out how one of the four dragons have managed to roar so hard that it has shaken our very comprehension of economy, don’t miss this museum.

Day and night in Patong beach

Patong beach is one of the most famous part and destination of Phuket in Thailand.

Sempu is a small island located in Indonesia, west part of Java. One of the most famous travel destination of Indonesia.

Getaway to Ho Chi Minh City

Located of the South of the country, Ho Chi Minh is a major city and travel destination of Vietnam, it was the witness of the Vietnam War.

The city is also called "Saigon" referring to the Saigon River that runs through the city. The city was named "Ho Chi Minh" in 1976 after the Fall of Saigon, as a tribute for the leader of the independence movement.

Despite Ho Chi Minh is not a capital, it is the most populated city of the country and also the most important economic center, that's why Ho Chi Minh is a city that never sleeps.

One of our blogger was planning holidays with friends, and one of them really wants to go to Vietnam, he read a couple of interesting articles about places to visit there.

Granted the view is stunning, making the ride such an unforgettable experience. There is only one train ride scheduled daily, which brings visitors to visit the Old Tree Station. Here, the train will stop for a few hours and tourists get the chance to explore thousand-years-old gigantic red cypress trees.

In the morning, the train brings the early birds up the mountain again to watch the famous sunrise. North Sumatran Precious Gem

There, nestled comfortably in the heart of North Sumatran mountains, lined by the town of Parapat and by extension, the city of Medan, lies the biggest freshwater lake in the whole of Sumatra, the sensational sparkling gem of Toba Lake.

I spent a considerable amount of my early childhood "consigned" (as my parents always swiftly and remorselessly put it, like a rented out old movie in the DVD store) at the Dharma Batama Graha Temple, a Mahayana Buddhist Centre in Parapat, just a few stone-throws away from the famed gem itself. Thus the Toba Lake has always retained a special charm in my heart. Daytime, it was the perfect racing spot with numerous kampong boys, as we struggled to outrun each other and plunge in (various creative styles and contortion - headfirst, toefirst, armfirst, buttfirst you name it) to rip apart its cold silvery surface. Come nightfall it turned into the perfect reflection spot, physically and mentally, when the round yellow moon winked jovially at its own mirror image on the glassy water, the air was still and the praying mantis chanted their songs in the velvety distance of the night. Sunset over the lake was priceless : the sky ablast with fiery red, and the water seemed to emit magical glow from within. I lay down and reflected on life as seen through my youthful eyes. Sometimes I wrote them down, at other times I proceeded to sit up on the cool wet grass to read my story books.

Even the average tourist harboring no soft-spot whatsoever towards the lake would be smitten by its quiet beauty. In the middle of the lake, there is Samosir Island, a tourist region where traditional culture prevails largely undisturbed. Toba Lake is the perfect destination for those looking for a short weekend to get away from the monotonous life routine.

Essential Information :

Getting to Toba Lake: Tourist mini-bus operators offer two different routes from Medan to Toba Lake. The quicker route is via Siantar (Pemantangsiantar). When there is enough demand a more scenic, but longer, route via Berastagi and Sipiso-piso waterfall is also available.

There are public buses and a daily train from Medan to Siantar. From Siantar there are public mini-buses to Parapat. Taking a public mini-bus for the whole journey from Medan to Parapat is not recommended since passengers are packed in like sardines and the journey takes over five hours. From Parapat ferries run hourly to Tuk-Tuk and less frequently to Ambarita.

An interesting alternative route would be to take a bus from Medan to Berastagi and then travel by bus (or buses) to Haranggaol, on the northern tip of the lake. A ferry runs, once a week, from Haranggaol to Ambarita. There may also be a ferry from Tongging (near Haranggaol) to Ambarita.

Accommodation: A good choice of accommodation is available on Tuk-Tuk. Ambarita is a bit too remote and quiet.

Food: The food at Tuk-Tuk is very good and much better than at Bukit Lawang or Medan. There are restaurants offering excellent beef rendang and western cookings.

Activities: Lots of people hire motorbikes but watch out! The roads on Tuk-Tuk are windy and twisty with plenty of potholes and blind turns. Accidents are common and could easily cost you Rp10,000,000, when you've paid for the ambulance from Siantar, hospital fees and bike repair costs. Much cheaper and safer are activities such as trekking and cycling. There are hot springs on the western side of Samosir island.

Colourful Tibet

Our regular blogger has just returned from her three-weeks-long sojourn in Tibet. Here, she paints her impression on Tibet in words.

Tibet is a regiment of colours, colors that range across the spectrum, in every possible shade and variation imaginable. Tucked in between stretches of unforgiving grey Himalayan mountains, it is as if Tibet is trying to declare its existence with strong, loud colours : green, red, yellow, blue, pink, and orange - purple, gold, vermilion, ochre, maroon, and silver. Rows and rows of bright colorful praying flags stretched across the sky - wondrously contrasted against the brilliant cerulean backdrop with gentle white tufts of the cloud.

Colours adorn every structure and every corner, every hidden turn and conspicuous facade - colors enhance the mountains, the river, the trees. In the Jokhang temple, dark purple and royal blue tapestries lined up the ceiling, embossed at their sides golden, emerald, and silver brocaded trimmings.

On the walls of Samye monasteries' infinite chapels, splashes of mineral-coloured oil painting twirl and twist and turn to form mythological creatures and centuries-old legends. Buddhas and Taras, Arahats, and Boddhisattvas, llamas and karmapas - all illustrated, engraved, embossed, sculpted in the holiest of colours, such as deep, revered crimson or lustrous, glaring yellow - such are the colours worn by the chanting monks, who pray and meditate in multitudes.

And there are other colours too. Too subtly integrated into the life of Tibet, they're almost imperceptible to the naked eyed. The use of every other senses (including that of intuition, that inkling at the pit of your stomach) is therefore of absolute imperative. Such are the warm, heavily shadowed shades on the holy walls of Potala Palace, constructed from layers of cloth and centuries of history.

Such is the melting, buttery yellow of yak butter's lamp, the warm, slippery yellow that grease and grace every stone temple walls, every steep staircases, and wooden rigs, marble carvings and golden stupas. There exist the noble colours of devotion - exuded from the devout Buddhist pilgrims who prostrate days and nights, circumambulating on the smooth stone alleys in the old quarter of Lhasa. There are also the lighthearted, silky colours of innocence and simplicity of mountain nomads, as reflected clearly in their white, brilliant smiles. Truly, the whole tibet is ablast with strident colours I had never felt so blessed to be born with healthy eyesight.

And there, outside the man-made settlements, are the colours generously and grandiosely painted by the Nature itself - colours perhaps not as cheerful or loud - but infinitely more majestic, more breathtaking, and simply irresistible.

Purplish grey shadows of rocky mountains, accented sparsely with dry, rough bushes of green vegetation. With every crease and every fold of the mountains, colours change in powdery smoothness. Beneath these, the silvery sparkle of Yarlung Tsampu river : the very origin of the holy Brahmaputra down the south. And beyond that.... golden sand dunes, so deliciously soft and malleable, providing such healthy grounds for the robust abundance of willowy greens. Fluffy and fuzzy as seen from our jeep-window distance, like those short curly trees I used to draw in crayon colours beneath my kindergarten-produced mountains. Never had I imagined that fifteen years down the road, the very same drawing of my childhood would conjure magically in front of my very eyes - only now a million time grander and more beautiful, with ten-thousands more variation of colours my then simple crayon box would have never been enough to hold.

The Perfect Solitude to End your Week

The name ‘Goa’ is pretty much present in every traveller’s head. And in all probability it is significantly high on their travel bucket list. And it is for this very reason that it is difficult to find places for a private holiday in Goa.

One wrong shot and you will need to jump into the river to fetch the ball, while another wrong shot can send you into the Arabian Sea!

There are two niche resorts that offer a mix of tented accommodation, log huts, beach facing cottages and river facing cottages. And all of them is located under the shade of swaying casuarinas and coconut trees. The resorts dish out the local catch in continental and local cuisine. And, if you feel like partying, the clubs of Palolem Beach and the more famous ones of North Goa are not too far away.

1. Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

Fire torches twirl, people paint their bodies, and some of the best Djs in the world spin electronica until people are passed out in the sand. The beach party peaks at sunrise!

Ko Pha Ngan is a top island destination in the Gulf of Thailand. The fame of the Full Moon Party has transformed the tiny peninsula of Haad Rin into one perpetual party, regardless of the moon phase!

3. Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia

With dreamy blue water and fine, white sand, Perhentian Kecil seems more a honeymoon retreat than party hotspot. Once the sun sets, however, bars set along the wide beach crank up the music; travelers alternate between fierce dancing and catching their breaths on the beach until sunrise.

Islamic law actually forbids alcohol on the island; prices are outrageously high so many travelers opt to bring their own supply from the mainland. Periodic raids by the police actually shut the party down for a week or so before things heat up again.

Visit during the peak Spring and Summer months to find the party; Perhentian Kecil is completely quiet the rest of the year.

4. Kuta, Bali

Kuta Beach in South Bali, Indonesia is a perpetual party as world travelers arrive in Denpasar. The party typically starts late as travelers swarm the sprawling discos and Western-style bars off the beach around midnight.

5. Khao San Road, Bangkok

6. Vang Vieng, Laos

Vang Vieng, hidden deep in the mountains of Central Laos, was once an airstrip used by the CIA for covert missions during the Vietnam War. Today, the river town is a haven for backpackers and budget travelers who come to party and play in the Nam Song River.

The tubing in Vang Vieng is really just an excuse to float lazily with a cheap Beer Laos in hand and to socialize with other budget travelers. Bars with wooden platforms and zip lines lure dripping people off the river to party and dance before floating onward to the next stop.

It is called SONGKRAN FESTIVAL, the traditional New Year's Day in Thailand from 13 to 15 April. It coincides with the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia.

The date of the festival was originally set by astrological calculation, but it is now fixed. If these days fall on a weekend, the missed days off are taken on the weekdays immediately following. If they fall in the middle of the week, many Thai take off from the previous Friday until the following Monday. Songkran falls in the hottest time of the year in Thailand, at the end of the dry season. Until 1888 the Thai New Year was the beginning of the year in Thailand; thereafter 1 April was used until 1940. 1 January is now the beginning of the year. The traditional Thai New Year has been a national holiday since then.

Songkran has traditionally been celebrated as the New Year for many centuries, and is believed to have been adapted from an Indian festival. It is now observed nationwide, even in the far south. However, the most famous Songkran celebrations are still in the northern city of Chiang Mai, where it continues for six days and even longer. It has also become a party for foreigners and an additional reason for many to visit Thailand for immersion in another culture.

The most obvious celebration of Songkran is the throwing of water. Thais roam the streets with containers of water or water guns (sometimes mixed with mentholated talc), or post themselves at the side of roads with a garden hose and drench each other and passersby. This, however, was not always the main activity of this festival. Songkran was traditionally a time to visit and pay respects to elders, including family members, friends, neighbors, and monks.

Besides the throwing of water, people celebrating Songkran may also go to a Buddhist monastery to pray and give food to monks. They may also cleanse Buddha images from household shrines as well as Buddha images at monasteries by gently pouring water mixed with a Thai fragrance over them. It is believed that doing this will bring good luck and prosperity for the New Year. In northern Thailand, people may carry handfuls of sand to their neighborhood monastery in order to recompense the dirt that they have carried away on their feet during the rest of the year. The sand is then sculpted into stupa-shaped piles and decorated with colorful flags.

Some people make New Year resolutions - to refrain from bad behavior, or to do good things. Songkran is a time for cleaning and renewal. Besides washing household Buddha images, many Thais also take this opportunity to give their home a thorough cleaning.

After participating in Songkran, you may now return to your daily routine, carrying that precious memory of unbridled laughter and losing yourself amidst the bash of splash!

RAINFOREST MUSIC FESTIVAL

Started by two Canadians Randy Raine-Reusch and Robert Basuik in 1997, this 3-days mind-blowing festival is now anually held every July or August in the Sarawak Cultural Village. The best thing is, it is perfect for weekends, because it IS HELD OVER THE WEEKEND!

The village is located in Damai, about 45 minutes from Sarawak's state capital, Kuching. It is one of the region's most popular events that features an international lineup of folk and world music bands. Not only does the festival attract plenty of musicians, but it also features plenty of workshops, a crafts market and variety of local foods to enjoy before the concerts take place after dawn.

Even if you are not a world or folk music fan, the festival should be on your list of things to do if you happen to be in Sarawak around this time. Single day tickets for the festival are available for RM 90 along with a 3 day event passes for RM 260. The festival organizes shuttle buses which depart hourly from all the major hotels (Grand Magherita, Gand Continental, Riverside Majestic, Hilton, Harbour View, Merdeka Palace). A return trip is only RM 20. It is highly recommended to use the shuttle buses, as there is limited parking around the festival area. The whole event is cash only so make sure to bring sufficient money for food, drinks, bus fare and CDs.

Appropriately named, the Rainforest Music Festival will likely experience an abundance of rain! An umbrella or raincoat should be in every visitor's bag to weather through the brief showers, but there are plenty of tents and roofed areas to relax under during a shower if you left your umbrella at the hotel. The grounds tend to get a little muddy, especially on the 2nd and 3rd day of the event, so leave the expensive shoes at home and grab some rubber sandals which will match your raincoat better anyways.

KITE SURFING AND FISHERMEN WATCHING IN MUI NE

Mui Ne (Mũi Né) is a coastal resort town in the Binh Tuanh Province of southeastern Vietnam. The town is close to the city of Phan Thiet Tourism has transformed Mui Ne into a resort destination since 1995, when many visited to view the total solar eclipse of October 24, 1995. Mui Ne has many resorts on the beach, as well as restaurants, bars and cafes.

This little beach town flaunts the reputation as the kite surfing capital of the world. In order to try it out, you need to take at least 10 hours lesson, but it still will not be an easy feat!

Of course you would need at least ten more months (or years!) to perform a somersault in the air.

While you are at it, don't forget to tour around a nearby sand dunes and fishing village called the Red Canyon.

However the most lasting impression you will have of this place is probably watching the fishermen take these little bowl shaped boats out to sea. Leaning over the side of these round boats paddling with one big paddle they slowly made their way past the surf and out to sea to cast their nets.

The most accessible part of southern Maluku, the Kei Islands are rapidly regaining their reputation as the place to go to look for perfect, unspoilt beaches. One of these beaches that is worth visiting is Ngurbloat Beach in Ngilngof village. Local natives call this beach “Pasir Panjang” or the long sandy beach.

The most popular destination is the island of Kei Kecil, which is connected by a bridge to the neighbouring island of Dullah. The bridge also connects the twin towns of Tual and Langgur that make up the capital of the entire Kei archipelago, and as such, the two islands form a practical unit.
In contrast to these two flat, deforested islands, Kei Besar, the largest of the Keis, is long, mountainous and forested.

The other islands in the Kei archipelago tend to be of the little white sands and coconut palms type, but the remotest of them, Tanimbar Kei, is noted for its traditional culture.
There is limited accomodation on Pasir Panjang on the island Kei Kecil, the best of these beaches. You can stay in small comfortable beach cottages built by the locals.They also can provide you with (warm) meals and fresh water. You also can hire a boat to visit the many small pittoresk islands or to go fishing or diving.

More and more people visit the Kei islands for surfing, windsurfing or kite-surfing or diving. The regional capital Tual is well connected by boat or by plane to the rest of Indonesia via Ambon, but has no attractions apart from its better facilities.

Local Culture

Christianity

The main religion in these islands is Christianity, with Kei being one of the few islands in Maluku where Catholics, rather than Protestants, dominate.
In fact Kei is seen as the centre of Catholicism in all Maluku!
Churches dominate most villages, and you may well be invited to join services on Sundays.

Islam

Away from the city of Tual which has plenty of non-native inhabitants from western Indonesia, Muslims are very much a minority in the Keis.
Keiese Muslims, like most in Maluku, tend to follow a very mild form of Islam, with veiled women a rarity. Mosques are mostly low-key affairs, too - however this shining new, Persian-style one is worth a look in its own right. It is on the outskirts of Tual, along the road leading towards Dullah village and Difur.

Getting There

By Air

There are several flights daily betwen Ambon and Langgur on Wings, Trigana and Expressair. Trigana also flies between Langgur and Dobo (Aru Islands) both ways, and from Saumlaki (Tanimbar Islands) to Langgur, while Expressair flies from Langgur to Saumlaki. Merpati also flies VERY irregularly from Langgur to Larat and Saumlaki.
There are plans to open a new airport with a longer airfield, which would enable larger aircraft to land here directly from Java and Sulawesi.

By Sea

Pelni ships conect Tual with Ambon, the Bandas, Dobo (Aru) and Saumlaki (Tanimbar).
They also continue on to Papua, Sulawesi and Java.
The KM Koromolin car ferry goes from Tual to Larat in northern Tanimbar (on Tuesdays), and to Kur via Tayando (on Saturdays) weekly, while the similar KM Lobster goes twice a week (Tuesday and Friday) to Dobo in Aru. Unlike the Pelni ships, these ferry runs are often cancelled when the seas are rough.

Well the Kei Island is rated in Lonely Planet as one of the top ten unspoilt beaches left in the world. As getting there takes much difficulty, be rest-assured that your excursion there will remain largely tourists-free.

THE LOST CITY OF MRAUK-U

Mrauk-U was the capital city of 48 kings for 355 years and was founded by King Mong Saw Mon in 1430. The city offers the visitor many chances to study the cultural and traditional heritage handed down to the present day Rakhine generation by their forefathers. Mrauk U can rightfully be claimed as the “Open-air Museum” of the arts and culture of the people of Rakhine.

The Golden days of this city were between the 16th and 17th centuries and contemporary to the days of the Tudor Kings, the Moghuls, the Ayuthaya Kings and the Ava (Inwa), Taungoo and Hanthawaddy Kings of Myanmar.

The city was well-fortified with 19 mile long fortification walls, moats and natural barriers: the then war-torn Rakhines began to regard it as the “Promised Land”.

Once, more than six million shrines and pagodas flourished and there is rarely a hilltop that does not adorn itself with one pagoda or another.

After the annexation of Arakan (Rakhine) by the British, the capital was shifted to Sittwe (Akyab): since that time Mrauk-U was known by the people as Mrohaung (Old City). The name Mrohaung was given by the British when they shifted their seat of administration to Sittwe in 1826. The original name was restored in 1979.

The city is just 40 miles away by river from Sittwe and the trip takes 3 to 4 hours. There are daily flights to Sittwe from Yangon which take 2 hours via Thandwe. The boat departs from a jetty in the Sattroegya, a tributary creek of the Kaladan river and on the way there are many places of interest to be seen along the river.

The gateway to Mrauk-U is Thantara village from where the undulating hills of the city with white temples and pagodas on their tops appear within sight. The Thinghanadi creek is the city's life-blood and the boat journey ends at Aungdatt wharf.

The stone pagodas were built three and four centuries ago and many have been totally neglected for the last 150 years: the sides of the stone blocks fit compactly and are joined with cement thus resisting the absorption of ficus which are capable of reducing a brick pagoda into a shapeless heap of bricks in a few years.

The pagodas and temples built or renovated during the Myanmar governor’s rule (after the fall of Mrauk-U 1785-1825) followed the tradition of the Kunhaung architecture, with smaller pagodas built at the corners of the lower basement of a pagoda; bricks were usually used in making the receding arches. U Mra Wa and Shwegu Daung pagodas are the two examples that still survive.

Gold and silver coins serve as the priceless heritage of the Mrauk-U period. The tradition of coin-making was handed down from the Vesali kings who started minting coins around the fifth century. The coins so far found are of one denomination only. Inscribed on the coins are the title of the ruling king and his year of coronation; coins before 1638 had Rakhine inscriptions on one side and Persian and Nagari inscriptions on the other. The inclusion of the foreign inscriptions was meant for the easy acceptance by the neighbouring countries and the Arab traders. Twenty-three types of silver coins and three types of gold coins have so far been found. All the kings who ascended the throne issued coins.

City walls, gates, settlements, monastery sites, fortresses, garrisons and moats are the other priceless heritages left to the safe keeping of today's Rakhine people. Stone rubbles of proud mansions of that period are also priceless reminders of Rakhine glory.

Pulau Hantu is located South of Singapore, and part of the Republic. It is famous for fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts because of its sheltered beaches, swimming lagoons and inviting waters. The island are also popular with campers and day-trippers who prefer a unique outdoor experience.

The island's name:

In Malay, "Pulau" means "island" and "Hantu" means "ghost". Therefore "Pulau Hantu" means "ghost island". However, you won't find any ghost there...

The explanation is much more rational: During the low tide, Pulau Hantu can be seen as one island with two large bays on the northern and southern side of the island. However during the high tide, the water level in the bays would rise and the mid-section of island (which is geographically lower than other parts) would disappear under the tide and resulting in two smaller islands. The disappearance and reappearance led to it being called "ghost".

But ever since stone and concrete embankments were built up, the island does not behave like a ghost anymore.

Activities:

The best site is the reefs located at the western shoreline of the island.

There is a large mangrove swamp but coconut plams and trees have been planted everywhere making it shady. Visitors can spend a whole afternoon exploring the swamp and at low tide, watch hermit crabs digging and mud skippers jumping from one mudflat to another, or even spot a starfish buried in the ground.

Popular with divers, the seabed around the island is shallow and flat and safe as a training and recreational area for newcomers. Migratory birds like cranes, herons and magpies can be seen here during certain times of the year.

Some facilities, including toilets and fresh water on tap are available on the island.

However, there is no electric power.

Legend:

Pulau Hantu is also the place of a myth! There were once two great warriors locked in a fierce battle at sea. Many people died and the blue seas slowly became polluted with human blood, upsetting the Jinns at the bottom of the ocean. In anger, one powerful Jinn created a whirlpool and sucked the 2 warriors into the deep sea to drown them. Not deterred, they continued their battle. Suddenly, the Jinn sprayed water on one of them, and the o

ther warrior seeing his opponent blinded, thrusted his sword into his abdomen. At the same time, the wounded warrior forced his sword into the other man. Both collapsed and died.

The gods felt it was wrong for the seas spirits to interfere in human affairs, thus, the Jinn transformed the two warriors into islets so that their spirits can continue to live on them. As one of the warriors was smaller than the other, his islet was known as "Pulau Hantu Kecil" while the bigger one was called "Pulau Hantu Besar".

Accessibility:

Take a launch from West Coast Fery Terminal. Capacity per launch is 12 persons. A two-way trip costs about S$140.00 depending on the duration of stay. Duration of the ride is 30 minutes each way.

Here, you choose your favourite python or cobra from behind a cage and watch him slither to the chopping block. The soup comes with the snake shredded inside, although, if you’re braver, you can try sliced snake in a host of other dishes. As it seems with almost all exotic meats, many say it tastes like chicken...

5. Sea Slugs

You’d think Sea Slug would be slimy and slightly rubbery and you’d be right. But the Sea Slug definitely doesn't taste like chicken.
Beginners should try it fried, which takes away some of the slippery texture, on a bed of noodles or rice with an accompanying sauce.
